With the forthcoming Shanghai World Expo, which will be held from May 1 to October 31, hotel rates in the city have jumped about 20 percent according to a People’s Daily online report Wednesday.

A report by the China Economic Weekly says the room rates of five-star hotels like the Shangri-la, Grant Hyatt and Hilton during the Shanghai Expo is about 1,500 yuan ($219.74) to 1,800 yuan, an increase of more than 20 percent compared with the end of 2009. The demand for rooms this year was greater than that at the end of 2009.

Statistics from Ctrip.com, a leading online travel service company in China say that the demand for rooms from economy hotels was more than four times than that at the end of last year and the prices also increased at different levels.

Meanwhile, the person in charge of rooms at the five-star JW Marriott Hotel in Shanghai said that prices may grow further as the expo draws nearer.

Currently, Shanghai has 550,000 beds, or 340,000 rooms; this is enough accommodation during normal periods, but not enough during the holidays, according to Han Zheng, mayor of Shanghai.

The upcoming World Expo is expected to bring in an estimated 70 million visitors and 58.5 million may from the other provinces or overseas, with the People’s Daily online report estimating an additional 400,000 beds are needed a day on average.

Godiva hopes to have three branded locations in Shanghai by the end of this year

Godiva, Others Hope For More Chinese Chocolate Consumption: Perhaps looking to cash in on the propensity of more cosmopolitan, urban Chinese to give expensive or boutique chocolate as gifts (and, increasingly, to eat for themselves), Belgian chocolate giant Godiva has aggressively sought expansion in the Chinese market. Having entered Hong Kong in 1998, Godiva decided to test the waters in the mainland last September, opening a store in Shanghai’s Grand Gateway Mall. Apparently satisfied with that store’s popularity, the company has announced that it plans to open two new flagship stores in Shanghai’s swish Xintiandi area and at the Shanghai International Financial Center (IFC). Japanese men miss out on Valentine’s chocolate as women treat themselves: Japan’s unique Valentine’s Day tradition of women giving chocolate to men is melting away as more women show a preference for pampering each other instead of their boyfriends and spouses. The practice of giving tomo choco (friendship chocolate) has been highlighted as a new trend in a recent survey that found 74 percent of women plan to give a Valentine’s gift to a female friend but only 32 percent intended to buy something for a boyfriend. The popularity of tomo choco has been attributed to the way that the custom offers women an excuse to have a girls’ night out – something pertinent at a time when so much social interaction is going digital. Shanghai is hosting the World Expo 2010

SINGAPORE (ChannelNewsAsia): Singapore companies are looking to benefit from new business opportunities in China, by positioning themselves to leverage on the Shanghai 2010 World Expo.

The six-month event, hosted by China, is expected to attract around 70 million attendees. And Singapore companies want to get a piece of the action by providing hotel rooms and activities to promote product branding.

A heritage building from the 1930s, along Hengshan Road in Shanghai, is home to a swanky boutique hotel – as travel agency Commonwealth Travel Service Corporation (CTC) invested US$4 million in the city as part of its regionalisation efforts.

CTC hopes to set up other entertainment outlets at Shanghai’s Yuyuan Garden, a famous classical garden in the heart of the city. It believes the Expo will help it recoup its investments two years earlier than expected.

“Our occupancy rate is above 80 per cent. Next year, we can expect new contracts with the Expo. It is another 100-room hotel set to open by May next year,” said Wee Hee Ling, managing director, Commonwealth Travel Service Corporation.

Apart from the hotel sector, food manufacturers are also looking for a slice of the pie.

“More people will be going to Shanghai for the Expo. During those months, we can hold larger scale activities, focusing on food safety and quality of our products,” said Liane Ong, regional director, Eastern China, International Operations Group, IE Singapore. – read more at ChannelNewsAsia.com…
